On 6 March 2024, the Institute of Women's Studies organized a symposium together with the Birkbeck Institute of Social Research titled “Except Palestine: Gender and Genocide - Amplifying Voices from Gaza and Building Anti-Colonial Feminist Solidarities." Dr. Rania Jawad, director of the Institute, Dr. Rema Hammami, a faculty member at the Institute, and Orouba Othman, a PhD student in Birzeit University's interdisciplinary program in the Social Sciences, spoke about Palestinian women's experiences of displacement, the politics of gender in representations of the genocide, and Israel's weaponization of women’s rights to delegitimise anti-colonial resistance, specifically drawing from the experiences and articulations of women from Gaza.
