The Institute of Women's Studies & Ibrahim Abu Lughod Institute of International Studies at Birzeit University hold a conference entitled “The Palestinian Economy: Fragmentation and Colonization” , in collaboration with the “Social and Economic Policies Monitor”,  Kenyon Institute and Al-Shabaka (The Palestinian Policy Network). The vice president for community affairs of Birzeit University and associate professor, Lisa Taraki, opened the conference emphasizing the importance of the conference as it reflects the concept of the engagement between the university as an academic institution and the community; in other words the participation of the university in the dialogue on crucial issues with the public sphere.  Taraki said that this conference is a part of growing efforts of the Palestinian studies’ field  to revive the critical political economy’s perspective in studying Palestinian issues, a perspective that re-positions economy in its wider political and social context.
